About
Weights & Takes is a daily AI briefing for developers and builders: the day's most useful news, model releases, GitHub repos and papers, each linked to its source, plus the take, a short opinion on what the day adds up to.
What's in an edition
- News, model releases, repos and papers, up to five of each, only from the last 24 hours (or since the previous edition). Every item has a link to its source, its date, a signal such as Hacker News points or stars per day, and one line on why it matters.
- Things to try: at most one thing you could actually use today.
- The take: 60 to 120 words naming the pattern across the day's items, and what it implies.
- Sundays: a weekly edition with a week in review, a longer take, and takes revisited, where earlier takes are graded held up, too early or missed. The misses stay on the record.
How it's made
Weights & Takes is AI-assisted curation. Each morning a script collects candidates from public sources: Hacker News, GitHub, Hugging Face (papers and models), arXiv, and vendor announcements found through web search. An AI model (Claude, made by Anthropic) then ranks them against a fixed set of editorial rules, checks dates and claims, and drafts the summaries and the take. A human editor sets those rules and maintains the pipeline; daily editions are generated and published automatically.
Some rules worth knowing:
- Nothing older than the edition's window gets in, however big it was.
- Summaries are short and in our own words; the source is always one click away.
- Funding rounds, hype pieces and benchmark claims without an artifact are left out.
- Repos are ranked by stars per day, not total stars. Bursts of near-identical repos that look like star farming are skipped and called out.
- Reported claims are labelled as reported. Vendor numbers are labelled as vendor numbers.
Mistakes happen. If you spot one, write to us and we'll correct it.
Archive editions
Some early editions were compiled after the fact, from sources dated on that day. They carry an "Archive edition" banner. Their signal counts (stars, points) were taken when they were compiled, so they include some hindsight, and they have no takes revisited.
